Chapter Two
Braxton picked me up in his vintage coupe. It was red with white highlights that looked like something out of a movie that took place in the early ’60s. He kept it in a garage off campus where a guy would detail it whenever he wanted to bring it out. It was impeccably maintained and even had a bit of new car smell.
“Hey,” smiled Braxton, opening the door for me. “I think you’re going to like this.”
“Where are we going?” I asked.
“Brentmoor Acres Country Club,” he explained. “It’s one of the most exclusive country clubs in the state.”
I had just gotten in the car, but now I moved to open the door again. Braxton didn’t notice and took off, zooming across campus.
“Oh, wait, I should change,” I said. “The place is fancy, right?”
“Fancy? It doesn’t get much fancier than Brentmoor Acres,” he chuckled. “But yeah, it’s not somewhere you want to show up to looking like a schlep.”
A schlep? Is that what he thought of me? Just some poor peasant who didn’t belong in his world? Could this be part of a longer and crueler game he was playing? I had kept Braxton and Harrison a secret for a reason--- I couldn’t trust either of them since they had bullied me.
But the thing was--- I was falling for both of them. I wanted to have a relationship with them, but how could I do that if I didn’t trust them? I felt like I constantly had to test their loyalty, but what kind of test would even satisfy me? Harrison and the whole Council had taken bullying me to a ridiculous extreme. Was I wrong not to trust them at this point?
It had been a few weeks. Maybe their initial encounter with me left them both feeling threatened. Now that they weren’t threatened, that was all in the past. I wanted to believe that, but I needed more than just their word. It was like, I was waiting for a sign to be sure the boys could be trusted.
And that was assuming they wouldn’t kill each other once they found out I was seeing them both at the same time.
“Braxton,” I said, mildly embarrassed. “You have to turn the car around. I can’t go into a country club dressed like this.”
“Oh, right, I’m sorry,” he said. “I forgot to tell you, I brought you an outfit. It’s perfect because I saw someone wear something similar once and it’s the kind of thing members wear. Plus, it's designer and super expensive.”
“Babe, I don’t know,” I said a little worried. “You sure? I mean, do I even want to know how much you spent?”
“My father’s a billionaire, baby,” he assured me. “Don’t sweat it for a second. He can certainly afford it. Hell, with just the spillover money I get--- I can afford it. It’s totally cool and why shouldn’t I buy nice things for my girl?”
He thought of me as “his girl”. God! Now I felt like I had betrayed him.
